The Alvarinho variety remained in the Melgaço region for years, and traditionally the vines were planted on the edges of the fields, with the cereals occupying the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, decided to break this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of vines of the Alvarinho variety in Melgaço, which was baptized with the name “Soalheiro”, due to its exposure solar. The pioneering spirit of João António marked the history of the family, which has since been linked to the production of the Alvarinho variety in Melgaço. Today, it is the third generation that continues the legacy, extending the vision to organic production.
